A flock of brazen birds beguiled
The nature of the skies: the clouds
Were billows of smothering sand,
And the sun a smoldering coin;
The angels drowned in sickly seas –
Above trees anemic and bland.
The rain was no rain, but hail
Of feather and stone. And mankind,
Beaten blind, crept on knee and hand.
