    Happy Birthday, Hurricane!

    An interview with Hurricane:

Why are we doing this interview thing?
I dunno. I've got nothing better to do.

Are you sure you want to do this?
    Not really.

    Got milk?
No, which is too bad since I do have cookies.

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
    See above.

If you had a personal theme song what would it be?
"The Adventure," but Angels & Airwaves.

Are you male or female? \
    Female.

What makes you keep coming back?
    Good conversation?

Are you happy with the way things are here?
    For the most part.

    Which countries have you visited?
England, Italy, Sweden, and Iceland. I'm spending a month up in Canada this summer.

How do you like your home town?
It's okay, but very small. My Mom's been the local elementary school art teacher there for about thirty years though, so I feel like I have to be on my best behavior whenever I'm home, which isn't often.

If you could live somewhere different, where would it be and why?
Washington state. I'm very much a New Englander, but I spent a couple weeks on the Olympic Penninsula backpacking and visting my older sister and liked the atmosphere very much. It's a beautiful place, though in recent years ruined by "Twilight."

    Do you have any pets?
Yes, a miniature schnauzer named Boudicca.

    What makes you happy?
Running, flying, being outdoors, and being with friends and family.

What is mankind's biggest achievement, and its greatest downfall?
I think our biggest achievement so far is probably the written word. Without that, we'd be nowhere. But as a historian (...sorta), I think it's disingenuous to point out a single achievement as mankind's "best." Mankind's greatest downfall will most likely be selfishness and greed.

Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God/atheism?
    Yes.

Which actor should play you in a movie based on your life?
It'd be best for my ego if it was Natalie Portman. Not so good with regards to accuracy though.

Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?
An otter. They look so content all of the time. Also, they're adorable.

What were your favorite things to do the past? What about now?
Reading and writing mostly. As a kid I always liked imagining things. That hasn't changed much, except now I channel that imagination into activities that aren't stupid or dangerous (I hope).

What makes you feel great about yourself?
I help out my friends who aren't so good at history/writing a lot, and that's a great feeling.

How did you meet your significant other?
Don't have one at the moment. Urk.

    Who inspires you most?
Theodore Roosevelt. Despite his (many) faults, a really amazing man.

What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)
I'm a decent writer and I read very quickly. I've also only gone ice skating twice, but I've never fallen and apparently am not horrible at it.

What is the one thing you must do before you die?
Have a family of my own.

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
    History.

What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?
I would regret it if I did not have close family or friends.

Do you feel the divine spark of life within you or do you consider yourself a mechanical thing?
While I think that humans are mechanical things or "molecular machines," I think there's a beautiful, almost mystical, aspect of how complex the human body is and how it's put together.

What method do you cherish above all others, as means to improving your life?
I like Stoicism. Control the things you can, deal with the things you can't, and just be happy.

What is your role in an emergency situation: the 911 dialer, the person who runs to the scene to help, the video recorder, or the person too overcome by shock to do anything?
Probably the person who runs to the scene to help and somehow manages to make it worse.

What one thing would you NEED to have on a deserted island if you didn't have to worry over food and water?
    A radio or signal mirror.

What song is in your head at the moment?
    "Open your Eyes," Snow Patrol.

Which book are you reading at the moment?
World War One: A Short History by Norman Stone.

The last book you finished reading?
Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz.

    What is your favourite quote?
Probably "The Man in the Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt. That, or this quote from "The Lorax":
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not.

    Favorite food?/ Comfort food?
I don't really have a favorite food, but for a comfort food nothing beats a buffalo chicken sandwich.

What time of day do you most often find yourself on the LitNet?
    Evening.

What are you wearing at the moment?
T-shirt and gym shorts. It gets unmercifully hot down here.

    Favorite poem?
    "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley.

First novel you remember reading on your own?
The first one I remember is The Hobbit, but there were definitely more before then.

What era do you find most of the books you read are from?
Probably 19th century. I have a hard time liking a lot of modern literature.

    Favorite TV shows?
It's off the air now, but the recent "Battlestar Galactica" series was pretty good. I also like "The Office" (US) and "Glee", but the latter's more of a guilty pleasure. Right now I think my favorite show is "Top Gear."

Which LitNet members would you like to meet in person if you could?
I'd be interested in meeting Virgil and papayahed.

Last words you said out loud?
"Bye, don't have too much fun!" To my roommate.

    Last person you hugged/kissed?
My friend Alex since he gave me my birthday present early.

What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?
I'm just a college student of sorts now, but in two years I'm going to be moving on to bigger and better things and get commissioned in the Navy or Marine Corps. I think I'll be very happy.

What question would you like to ask yourself?
    Why?

What would you like to be if you could change your profession?
Either history professor or mad African helicopter tour pilot. Or rally car driver. There's so many options!

What is your most outstanding feature?
I'm not sure. I like helping people, that's something.

If you could change one thing about the way you look, what would that be?
    My hair. It's very frizzy.

Which book do you wish you had written?
In pure monetary terms...The Harry Potter series. In the sense of literary merit, probably "Crime and Punishment."

What should you be doing at the moment instead of answering these questions?
    Cleaning my room.

If you could only rescue one item from your burning house, what would it be, and why?
I'm not sure. There's not much stuff that I'm terribly attached to, which is probably for the best.

    Wonderful Superman or depressing Batman?
Depressing Batman. Much more interesting character.

Anything that you want to forget but you never can?
    Yes.

Tell us about some amusing translation mistake you have heard or made yourself.
I've heard some bad ones, but can't think of a really amusing one off the top of my head. One of my friends mistranslated a line from "The Aeneid" as involving smelly goats hurling rocks off a cliff, but that's the best I can do right now.

Are you mostly happy with life or are you still in pursuit?
In pursuit, but I think the pursuit's half the fun and makes it all worthwhile.

What type of Faerie would you like to be and why?
    I...what?

    What makes you laugh?
Pretty much everything, but especially when things go from "bad" to "ludicrously worse." I think there's humor in pretty much anything.

What part of “Final” don’t you understand?
    The final part.

One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?
    Have fun.

What question would you like to ask to the person to be interview after you?
What would you do during the zombie apocolypse?
    ~

Happy Birthday Hurricane! Great interview. It's nice to know you better.

Thank you so much for mentioning me. That man in the arena quote by Teddy Roosevelt is framed and on my desk at work. Definitely one of my favorite quote and something I guide my career path by.

If you ever make it to NYC (and I'm sure one day you will) let me know in advance and it would by pleasure to buy you lunch, especially if you are a commissioned officer.

    Hurricane, have a happy birthday!

"But do you really, seriously, Major Scobie," Dr. Sykes asked, "believe in hell?"
    "Oh, yes, I do."
    "In flames and torment?"
"Perhaps not quite that. They tell us it may be a permanent sense of loss."
"That sort of hell wouldn't worry me," Fellowes said.
"Perhaps you've never lost anything of importance," Scobie said.

Happy Birthday, Hurricane. We've never really talked, but I wanted to say that I think you're a very funny person, and your considerable intelligence is revealed through your sense of humor.
