Subby & The Empire State Building

I've promised to post pictures of my afternoon with long tme lit net member Subby (Subterrainian). She came to visit New York City with a friend and we (Subby, her friend, my wife, and I) met up in early October for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, a stroll down to The Empire State Building and up to the observation deck, and then a quick subway ride to little Italy for coffee and desert. Subby had started a thread about our meeting up and she even posted one of her pictures. Here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/11/ny...erland&emc=rss. So here are some pictures of our afternoon.

Here is a picture of Times Square where my wife and I met up with Subby and her friend. We were early and I was to look for an asian girl with a pink knapsack.



Subby thought it would be easy. I'm not sure she realized how many people are around Times Square on Sunday afternoon.

We walked downtown to the Empire state building and we found a parade going down Fifth Avenue. It turned out to be the annual Polish-American Day Parade.



This was in front of the Empire State Building and I decided to shoot a couple pictures of building from the ground.





Subby was a little surprised I had never been to the Empire State Building. The building is 102 stories high, but the observation deck is on the 86th floor. I took a picture of the elevator stopping.



Now it was an overcast and foggy day, so not the optimum for picture taking. But here are some pictures from the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

This is looking west/northwest:



This is looking east/northeast. The building on the left is the Chrysler Building, possibly the most artistically designed of all the sky scrapers. The squarish greenish building on the right I think is the United Nations building.



Here's a zoom in of the Chrysler Building. It is gorgeous.



This is looking south west. You can kind of make out the Stature of Liberty at the far end of the Hudson River.



This is looking due south. What's missing of course are the Twin Towers, never to be again.



Here's the top, the 16 floors above us:



This is what it's like on the observation deck. This goes all theway around the building.



And looking down. You can see the parade still going on.



I had a persisent guest who wanted to get into the pictures.





Here's Subby and me. Beauty and the beast. (Subby is the beauty of course.)



Ok then we went down to Little Italy and it so happened that by looking north up Mulberry Street, you could actually see the Empire State Building.



We had desert at a famous cafe/desert restaurant called Ferraro's. You can read something about it here: http://www.ferrarosrestaurant.com/main.html. we didn't take pictures of the Italian pasteries but not only were they delicious, they were gorgeous to look at. We thought of taking pictures of it after we had eaten them.
And finally one more picture of Subby and Virgil.



We had a nice time.

    Eeek, the pictures are rather large. Sorry I don't know what to do about that.

    Wow, this is giant, New -York! This is incredible! Subby is a lucky girl, I want to meet with uncle Virge and have fun too. If we just avoided talking about certain subjects we could have a nice time, I swear. About the pics, photobucket might help.

    Quite simply, WOW! Those are cool photos. I'd love to visit America some day. Good to hear that you all had a nice time together

    Those pictures are wonderful, Virgil. Glad that you were able to meet Subby.

    I really had a smile when I saw that 'persistant presence' that wanted to get into the pics, lol!

    I liked what you wrote between each of the pictures, I felt like I had a tour, too! Great entry, Virgil.

    lovely pictures! it looks like you guys had a great time. even though it was cloudy and foggy, I think your pictures of Manhattan are great. The Chrysler building really is gorgeous.

    New York City is both beautiful and horrible at once. I would be constantly terrified-- too much, too fast. There is such beauty in simplicity.

    Ok, I was able to resize the pictures. I do think they were more interesting in that large format. You could really see the detail.

    Thanks for your comment. Yes New York is large and intimidating. But those pictures are not the whole city. I live in a residential area of houses.

    I love these photos. Makes me want to come up to the city again. I like the ones with you and Subby; I knew who the beauty was. Subby, you are very pretty and you look just as friendly, too. Good photos, Virgil. I like the hazy polution ones....I laughed and thought 'fog' at first sight, but I know better. Still makes for a lovely photo.....really nice. The photos aren't too big. Good photos of you, too. Looked and sounded like a fun day. That pigeon looks curious.....or just hungry...looking for a handout...

    Great pictures! Great to see that you two had a good time, too! I'm a little jealous, though! Too bad that we never got that chance to meet! But who knew we'd be that close to each other, right?

    You are going to have to make another trip to the Empire State Building someday. I absolutely LOVE skylines at night! I would love to see some nighttime pics! You will have to do this for me now! Well you don't have to, but only if you're in the neighborhood sometime. And the mood strikes you to go all the way up there to do it, of course!

    Cool pics! Almost everywhere there are such tall buildings... I wonder how many people are there in that area. The Chrysler building is beautiful. The city seems crowded, but I think that is how the metro cities are...

    My brother once sent me pics of his visit to Times Square during New year's time. I could see that people had come out to celebrate and there was a huge crowd on the roads. He was telling me that if you stand at the Times Square for a minute you could see people of so many nationalities in such a short time.

    hmmmm.... who is that 'old' guy standing next to Sub?

    Janine, it's not pollution. It's fog/overcast sky.

    LadyWent, I don't know what pictures would come out at night. Plus I'm not sure the building is open to the public after hours.

    Maddie, New York City has a population of over 8 1/4 million. Plus lots commute into the city for work. I think the surrounding metropolitan area has 18 million. Oh I know I look old.

    How cool that you and Subterrainian were able to spend the day together!

    Your pics are wonderful! I've never had the chance to visit NY though I would love to.

    Just an aside, was it at all awkward meeting someone you only knew online?

    Thank you all. No I didn't find it awkward. I'm a fairly gregarius person and I think so is Subby. Worse thing that could have happened is we would not have had anything to say. But that wasn't the case.

    Just like what kiz paws said, these pictures and texts in time sequence feel like a fresh tour. The size of the pictures works for me. And they gave me a concrete image of one aspect of this unusual city, not just that vague one in my imagination before.

    It is really a nice thing to meet the persons you've been writing to. It is so real.
