Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

Rate this Entry
So i had my long dreaded hospital appointment today. Spent all of yesterday drinking Klean Prep to flush out my intire system. Lets just say the term "pain in the arse" has a whole new meaning to me! Had to have lunch before one o'clock yesterday afternoon and i was only allowed to drink fluids up till midnight last night when i had to start fasting. Was starving this morning. Of course, every station i flicked through this morning contained cooking programmes which only made it worse! not to mention the fact that they had jamie oliver on the tv in the waiting room in the hospital!
My appointment was for 1.30pm. got there early, my mother drove me up. I was to be the first one to have the proceedures done that afternoon and of course i was having TWO!
Thankfully i was sedated but i was still very much awake and remained aware of everything even though i couldnt feel it per say.( bar when they blew a load of air into my colon! ouchy!) the 40 mins went by in a fash and they brought me back to the ward to rest for an hour, which i couldnt. Surprisingly, i was more alert than most of the other patients who were under sedation. I had gotten a bit upset during and after the procedure (which apparently is a side afect of the sedetive.) After about 20mins of sitting in the bed, they came back over to me and asked me if i wanted tea, which i willingly did seeing as i hadnt had anything since the day before.
After my tea and bickies i was able to get dressed and after a little chat with one of the nurses about the procedure, i was able to go home. She only gave me a little bit of info. Aparently i've an inflamation in my oesophagus, but it wasnt much to worry about. They had also taken tissue samples from my tummy and colon.
I now have to wait another six weeks to find out my results. All this just so someone can tell me that Yes i do have irritable bowel syndrom.

that sounds horrible. is IBS related to stress? Or is it caused by stress or made worse by stress? Ugh is all I can say. Hope you're having some good chow after that fast.

I treated myself to smoked cod and chips. Its caused by a load of different things combined. Stress, bad sleeping patterns, irregular eating habits and not eating proper food are the main culprits. Its very very hard to get rid of and if i do have it, there is a potential that i could have it for the rest of my life. I already have to take a tablet called Spasmonol (call them my spas tabs! ) three times a day, and have done since the end of August when I first went to my GP about problems i'd been having for a few months. Was refared to a gastroentrologist, who i saw in october, and i had to wait till now to have the proceedures because i dont have any private health care, and was on a public waiting list.

Oh Niamh, sorry to hear that you went through all this. But hopefully they can use the information to give you the best treatments possible. You eat a ton of food now, to make up for the inconvenience. Take care, waiting six weeks can be crazy, but we are there for you!

It’s hard to wait for results, I just want to know right now. I’m sorry you had to go through that, but I imagine that it wasn’t so bad as what you’ve had to go through in the months leading up to it. I hope they can help you to feel better.

thanks everyone. The Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy were okay compared to what i'm going through now! I've had a nasty stabbing pain in my side since last night, i think its caused by trapped air, very uncomfortable. and my throat is sore, but thats expected seeing as i did have a camera shoved down it.....
