The celebrated American author Edith Wharton was born into a wealthy and socially prominent family in New York City in 1862. She was schooled by private tutors, spent portions of her childhood in Europe and at 17 was introduced to society at a glorious debutante ball. After her marriage, she and her husband, Teddy Wharton, lived in Newport, the Gilded Age watering hole for the wealthy.
