AS A WRITER of novels and short stories, travelogues and poetry, Edith Wharton was startlingly prolific. The Age Of Innocence (filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1993) and The House Of Mirth are the titles for which she is now primarily remembered, but between 1897 and 1937 this remarkable woman produced almost one book a year.
