MATTHEW BRADY AND EDITH WHARTON Matthew Brady's photographs are the only visual record of much of the 19th century, including the Civil War. From early daguerreotypes on silver plates to majestic "Imperial" photographs to the tiny cartes de visites made by the millions during the Civil War, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery has selected more than 100 images to form the most comprehensive modern exhibition devoted to Brady's career. The show, already underway, closes Jan. 4.
