He had arrived one cold and snowy February day at the Coach and Horses
Inn in Iping and had called out immediately for a room and a fire to warm
himself. After agreeing to terms, Mrs. Hall, the landlady, had left him in his
quarters and had gone to prepare a meal, congratulating herself as she did on
the good fortune to have a paying guest in winter. On her return with plates
