It is difficult in our time to do justice to Carlyle, or to get him right. Simon Heffer in this book makes a good shot at it -- as sympathetic as can be, scholarly and just, a trifle too long. The best thing about it is the introductory chapter on the decline of Carlyle's reputation, and the admirable treatment of what Froude suffered for writing one of the finest of English biographies about him.
