Those who are familiar with philosophy know how easy it is for a label to
become attached to a group of thinkers. They also know how easy it is to
believe that since a label exists there must be an idea behind it. Thus an
atmosphere is created in which either a group of thinkers is treated as a
unity which is so loose that it obscures important differences, or a unity of
ideas is so rigidly imposed that fruitful comparison is prohibited. In
