THE crackly opening of this vintage recording evokes the world of American experimental theatre in the late 1930s, when Welles - who both starred and directed - premiered it for Mercury Theater on the Air. It's still a thrill to hear his voice - it was that of a perfect showman. While all the actors have spot-on diction, Welles himself comes across like the straight precursor of Richard O'Brien in The Rocky Horror Show.
