In her article on Sherwood Anderson's short story "Hands," Gwendolyn Morgan takes aim at what she perceives to be an authorial oversight (47). Her criticism is of Anderson's use of the metaphor "the piston rods of his machinery of expression" (Anderson 28) in a scene that Morgan believes to be an expression of humanity rather than inhumanity. The contested scene occurs when Wing Biddlebaum's manner of talking to George Willard, the only person with whom he has any sort of relationship, is described:
