ONE OF the highlights of a splendid weekend in Chicago was picking up the Sunday Chicago Sun-Times and seeing a lengthy, laudatory review of "Sherwood Anderson: A Writer in America, Vol. 1" by longtime Madison resident Walter B. Rideout.

The book, published this month by the University of Wisconsin Press, gives new dimension to the term "long-awaited."

Back in the 1970s, I had Professor Rideout for a course at UW-Madison in modern American literature, and even then he was saying somewhat sheepishly that it was time he should finish the Anderson ...
