The shortlist has been announced for this year's GBP30,000 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction.

The books on the shortlist include The World Is What It Is: The Authorised Biography of VS Naipaul by Patrick French; Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart by Tim Butcher; Crow Country by Mark Cocker; and The Whisperers by Orlando Figes, the BBC reported.

The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross; and The Suspicions of Mr Whicher Or The Murder at Road Hill House by Kate Summerscale complete the shortlist.
