THE GRAPES ALTHOUGH named after the mysteries author, who had more of his books made into films than any other 20th-century writer, the pub's literary connection goes back even further. In a previous incarnation, it was a meeting place for dictionary inventor Dr Samuel Johnson and his cronies.

The pub specialises in cask ales and bottled beers, including its house bitter Edgar's Pale Ale, and also holds regular beer festivals. The menu features contemporary, freshly-cooked pub food. 40 Essex Street, WC2 (020 7353 3120)
