James Shapiro, Professor of English at Columbia University, New York, was awarded the 2006 30,000 [pounds sterling] BBC Four/Samuel Johnson Prize for his book 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare (Faber & Faber). A delighted Shapiro said, 'I am a boy from Brooklyn and to come here and be acknowledged in this way is truly extraordinary'.
