The shortlist for this year's BBC Four Samuel Johnson Prize has been unveiled.

Among the shortlist of six are three first-time authors - Suketu Mehta for 'Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found' (Headline Review), Alexander Masters for 'Stuart: A Life Lived Backwards' (Fourth Estate) and Sarah Wise for 'The Italian Boy: Murder and Grave-Robbery in 1830s London' (Jonathan Cape).

Also shortlisted are 'Like a Fiery Elephant: The Story of BS Johnson' by Jonathan Coe (Picador), 'Istanbul: Memories of a City' by Orhan Pamuk ...
