Ho did Dr Samuel Johnson have had in mind when he said of an acquaintance in 1770 that "while he would not speak ill of any man, he had heard he was an attorney". Then, as now, he would have been spoilt for choice, but one contemporary candidate might well be Lord Woolf, formerly the Lord Chief Justice, a position from which, some would say mercifully, he retired in 2005.
