``I never could lie worth a damn," Tom Clancy admitted to 3,000 people Tuesday in the Fort Worth Convention Center.

It's an admirable failing, which is why people often admit to it, but it's also an odd claim for a fiction writer. Art, Picasso told us, is the lie that tells the truth.

Clancy's proudest claim, however, is "verisimilitude." He often boasts of the accuracy of his thrillers: "If I say it's true, it's damn well true," he said. "Or at least possible."
