Johnson, Samuel (1709–84) The great English essayist, biographer, poet, editor, lexicographer, and conversationalist first published proposals for a new edition of Shakespeare in 1745, then again in 1756, but his edition, with its famous Preface, did not appear until 1765. A useful compilation of his Shakespeare criticism is the Penguin Samuel Johnson on Shakespeare , edited by Henry Woudhuysen (1989).
