Britain's Samuel Johnson award for non-fiction has broken with an unspoken tradition and selected a long list containing fewer war books and biographies than ever before.

The GBP30,000 prize has been won by books on the first or second world wars, or a biography since 1999. The 2004 longlist includes only one war book and three biographies out of the twenty three selected titles.

This year's selection is marked by a move towards travel, history and off-the-wall best sellers, including Lynne Truss's hit, 'Eats, Shoots ...
