Socialists, progressives, and similar denizens of the political left love to boast about their compassion. They think it distinguishes them from "unfeeling" politicians on the right and gives them the moral high ground in all political debates. The socialist wants to feed the poor children; the capitalist would let them starve. Progressive politicians want to comfort the sick; their reactionary counterparts would watch them suffer.
