Jean Jacques Rousseau, the Swiss-born French philosopher, wrote in 1762 of the "Social Contact." Pondering the plight of man (referred to as the "associate") and his relationship to other men, Rousseau explained that the problem, "is to find a form of association which will defend and protect with the whole common force the person and goods of each associate."
Rousseau should have met Alan Drake.
Drake is a streetcar buff who in the early hours of Sunday, April 18, had a plan to defend and protect that portion of the common force that wanted to ride the first Canal streetcar.
