The Social Contract: Book I
Introduction:
With the publication of the Social Contract in 1762, Rousseau reached the
pinnacle of his political and philosophical development. He had come a long
way from the prize - winning essay acclaimed at Dijon in 1750. The rugged
individualism and distrust of all civil authority of the early Discourses now
gives way to the construction of a positive political society. "Anarchy" and
