This essay was first published in the Encyclopedia of Diderot in 1755.
Whether or not it was written before the Discourse On Inequality is subject to
some controversy. The fact that it is the first essay to contain many positive
political speculations about civil society rather than positing the
superiority of a state of nature as in the previous Discourses, has led some
