Retired sportswriter John Carmichael dies

John P. Carmichael, 83, known as "the home run slugger of all sportswriters" for his humorous and good-natured storytelling as a Chicago Daily News columnist and editor, died yesterday at Columbus Hospital.

Mr. Carmichael, of the North Side, was acclaimed as perhaps Chicago's best sportswriter during a 45-year career here.

A skilled speaker as well, he was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1975, joining such standout writers as Grantland Rice, Ring Lardner and Damon Runyon.
