Plato's "Republic and Laws" offer incompatible views of the best political regime. The former offers the legal rule of philosophy and the latter offers the rule of law. However, the two views do not oppose each other, they constitute two stages of the nature of politics. The Republic demonstrates the function of government by the wise while the Laws leave behind the utopian theory in favor of the sober rule of law.
