Samuel M. Plato, a prominent African-American architect during the first
half of the 20th century, spent his early career in Indiana. Plato came to
the Hoosier state in 1902. As a resident of Marion in Grant County, he
designed some of that town's finest churches, homes, and buildings.

Plato was born in Waugh, Montgomery County, Ala., in 1882. As a young man,
Plato attended Mount Meigns Institute, which was established near his home.
After graduation, he studied an additional year in Winston-Salem, N.C.
