Plato ( Plātōn )
(427–347 BC), Greek philosopher, founder of philosophical idealism and one of the greatest of Greek prose-writers.1. Plato was born of a noble family which claimed descent from Codrus, an early king of Athens. His life and writings show the enormous influence upon him of Socrates' life and the manner of his death. At first he wrote poetry (probably none of the epigrams attributed to him is genuine) but meeting Socrates in about 407 BC turned his attention to philosophy.
