Philip And Elizabeth by Gyles Brandreth (Century, [pounds sterling]20 . [pounds sterling]16) was rather snootily reviewed elsewhere, largely, I suspect, by those who had made up their minds about the author and his subjects before bothering to read the book. In fact it is a joy: outrageously gossipy but still broadly sympathetic and with hundreds of first-class jokes.
