If you have ever been trounced in tennis by an 80-year-old, you'll understand why I sometimes thought that my father-in-law might live forever. He could beat me at tennis and much else besides - although victory and defeat might not be the right terms to describe who was better at fixing faucets, soldering leaking pipes, hanging picket gates, putting down baseboard and mastering a hundred other chores.
