Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes opined from the federal bench more than 100 years ago that taxes are the price we "pay for civilization."
Holmes was no doubt right in his time. Taxes were at one time necessary to pay for courts, police and the enforcement of freely agreed-to contracts. Few of us begrudge taxes to pay for this basic framework of law and order. The alternative is English philosopher Thomas Hobbes' version of life: "solitary, nasty, poor, brutish and short."
