Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote in 1858 that Boston was the "hub of the solar system."

His words, slightly altered, are engraved in a bronze marker in the sidewalk at Washington and Summer streets. At the top is inscribed: "Hub of the Universe;" at the bottom, "Filene's Boston."

These words are an appropriate symbol of Boston's unique mixture of history and commerce.

For in the Hub, one can both shop and sightsee, taking in the best the city has to offer.
