When Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., said, "The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience," he could have been speaking of fund raising. No amount of logic can replace experience for anticipating human behavior, whether it be to act lawfully or to make a philanthropic contribution.

Experience has shown, for example, that the novice fund raiser who uses logic to run a campaign will almost certainly fail. Therefore, much of my work as a fund-raising consultant is spent advising clients on what not to do.
