The son of Oliver Wendell Holmes was given the same first names as his father. He became a distinguished lawyer. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was educated at Harvard College. Holmes served with the Union Army during the Civil War.

Holmes practiced law in Boston after the war. He edited the American Law Review for three years. He served, first as an associate justice and then as chief justice, on the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1882 to 1902. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him to be a justice of the United States Supreme Court. He served ...
