Regarding the letter "America doesn't owe immigrants anything" (Aug. 18):
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. has a perfect perspective regarding one's right to exercise free speech. I quote, "We should be eternally vigilant against attempts to check the expression of opinions that we loathe."
I can only add that America owes much appreciation for the persistence and determination of immigrants and for those who came to the United States, even against their own wills. The contributions are greater than can be written about in this letter. America's past has incidents of which I am ...
