The 1671 publication of Samson Agonistes and Paradise Regained has prompted critical and typological comparison between Milton's two deliverers, Jesus and Samson. Milton prefaces Samson Agonistes with patristic precedent for biblical tragedy: "Gregory Nazianzen a Father of the Church, thought it not unbeseeming the sanctity of his person to write a Tragedy, which he entitl'd, Christ Suffering."
