William B. Hunter cited Bishop Burgess in defending his proposition that John Milton was not the author of 'De Doctrina Christiana,' a heretical theological treatise. An account of Burgess, however, describes him as indiscreet and partial when defending some cherished opinion or principle. Burgess published three discourses trying to prove to the Royal Society of Literature that Milton was not the author of the manuscript in question on the grounds that it was not anti-Catholic enough.
