Paradise Lost: Book 2
(Lines 1-42) Satan sits on his richly beautiful throne. His
determination to go on fighting against God has raised him to this "bad
eminence." His despair has, in a sense, placed him higher than hope could
have done, for hope would have led him to a second place in Heaven. Despair
has raised him, ironically, to the first place in Hell, the peak of evil,
which is, of course, at the same time, the lowest possible spot in the
universe. He begins the conference of the principal devils by assuring them
once more that they will regain Heaven ...
