Chosen in a poll by fifty international critics from the German magazine Opernwelt as Opera House of the Year, Stuttgart opened the current season with a bang, presenting Luigi Nono's Al Gran Sole Carico dAmore on November 8, in what was only the fourth production since its 1975 world premiere in Milan. Called an azione scenica in two acts, the work defies a traditional definition of opera.
