VALLETTA, Malta - The music room of the Soviet cruise ship Maxim Gorky earned an unlikely place in world history yesterday, in a summit more given to surprises of personal interaction than of substance.
With its raised bandstand serving as the superpower podium, the music room became the site of the first organized news conference for the presidents of the United States and the Soviet Union.
Both men took the unexpected circumstances in stride.
Bush told reporters that his weekend summit with Gorbachev had helped the two men clear out misconceptions about one another.
