The tiny Finborough Theatre doubles superbly as the dingy provincial doss-house where down-and-outs congregate in Maxim Gorky's 1902 play. The play itches on the edge of revolution, but it nurses honest doubts about the frame of mind needed to foment purposeful unrest. Played with persuasive grittiness and glinting gallows humour by the large, characterful cast, it is a work animated by a deep emotional ambivalence. A stimulating and timely revival. To 9 Jun
