I discovered Isaac Babel's stories when I was a teenager and I have never stopped loving them. The two essential collections are his Odessa Stories and Red Cavalry Stories, usually published in one book. Now Picador has published a gorgeous, sumptuous, golden- coloured, thousand-page collection. I had read the terse sketches of his life in St Petersburg in the First World War, which won the patronage of the famous writer Maxim Gorky, who published him. But of the masterpieces that made his name, the Odessa stories are my favourites.
