Thanks to Nicky Bunch's excellent, atmospheric design, the tiny Finborough Theatre doubles superbly as the dark, dingy provincial doss-house where the down-and-outs who've fallen through the cracks in Russian society congregate in Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths. For this stirring production, Phil Willmott directs a version that draws on the original 1902 text, the revisions the author made a year later, and the short story "Creatures That Once Were Men".
