PLAYWRIGHTS have interpreted the world in various ways, but Bertolt Brecht's intention was always to change it. Annie Castledine's revival of his early agitprop play from 1931 may therefore be meant as an antidote to unaligned modern cynicism.
Adapted from Maxim Gorky's novel, the play is, after all, a stern parable of awakening following an apolitical mother sucked into revolutionary activity in Russia of 1905.
