The man whom critic Clement Greenberg called "the equal of any painter of his own generation anywhere" was born Vosdanik Adoian in Turkey, where Armenian families, such as his, were in danger of being massacred by the majority Turks. By 1920, when Adoian was about 20 (his birth year is not a matter of record), he had fetched up in the United States, where he changed his name to Arshile Gorky, claiming to be related to the Russian novelist Maxim Gorky.
