Soviet Ambassador Yury Dubinin was aboard the Soviet cruise liner
Maxim Gorky with Mikhail Gorbachev and George H. W. Bush in December 1989
when the two leaders officially declared an end to the Cold War.
The Malta Summit, as it became known, brought a chapter of world
history to a close -- a chapter in which Dubinin played a supporting, if
not starring role, serving as ambassador to France, Spain, the United States
