THERE'S A visual majesty about the work of Max Ophuls, a German-born, French-naturalized director who turned deceptively frilly subjects into deeply affecting works through his masterful use of the camera. The swirling pans, tracking movements, tilts and booms turned his camera into the most important character in his films, which included "Letter From an Unknown Woman," "La Ronde" and "Lola Montes."
