THE Necklace by Guy de Maupassant is an ingenious and provocative piece of narrative that invites interaction on many levels. Firstly, it is a story about class. It functions as a critique of the petit bourgeoisie - the lower middle classes - of 19th-century France as represented by Mathilde who aspires to the lifestyle of the upper classes and aristocrats, and symbolised by the occupation of her husband, a clerk.
