Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. touched the soul of the nation, challenging us as the keepers of our forefathers' legacy to live up to the aspirations of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
He spoke with extraordinary passion and eloquence about the unfulfilled promise of our nation as a place where all men would have equality of opportunity and the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And he did help mightily to bring change to the land, even as controversy was his constant companion as he spoke out against racism, the Vietnam War and poverty.
